The Role of Orthotics in Athletic Therapy
Brett Nagata, A.T. @ A.C., Vol.4
Following on from my last A.T.@A.C. blog, Ready for Hockey Season? Why Insoles
are a Game Changer, Blog 4 is more for the general public. As an athletic therapist, I
frequently encounter clients who experience discomfort or pain in their feet, ankles,
knees, hips and even low back. Often, these issues stem from improper biomechanics
during movement. One solution that is often overlooked but highly effective is the use of
orthotics. A small imbalance in the foot can result in compensatory movements
throughout the body, leading to pain or injury in other areas such as the knees, hips, or
lower back.
What Are Orthotics?
Orthotics are devices inserted into your shoes to support and align your feet. They come
in various shapes, materials, and levels of rigidity, depending on individual needs. The
primary goal is to correct abnormalities in the foot structure or movement patterns,
providing better overall alignment for the body.
Custom vs. Over-the-Counter Orthotics:
When considering orthotics, it’s essential to differentiate between custom-made and
over-the-counter (OTC) options. Custom orthotics are tailored to the specific needs of
the individual. While more expensive, they are made to address your specific foot
anatomy. On the other hand, OTC orthotics are a more affordable option. They can still
provide relief for general foot issues but may not address more complex biomechanical
imbalances.
Orthotics and Athletic Therapy:
As athletic therapists, we play a critical role in determining whether a patient can benefit
from orthotics. We assess your gait, and overall biomechanics to identify whether
improper foot mechanics are a contributing factor to your condition.
An orthotic device is not a “quick fix,” though. It is one component of a broader treatment
plan that may include strengthening exercises, mobility work, and manual therapy. Our
goal is to create a holistic approach to injury prevention and performance enhancement
Conclusion
Orthotics can be a game-changer whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to
prevent one, or simply seeking to enhance your performance, proper foot support through
orthotics may be part of the solution. As an athletic therapist, I’ve seen first-hand how
something as seemingly small as a foot insert can make a significant difference in one’s
journey.
If you’re experiencing discomfort or noticing biomechanical issues, consider booking a
gait assessment at Apple Creek Sports Medicine Centre—your feet (and the rest of your
body) will thank you!
