What is ImPACT concussion testing?
- ImPACT is a research-based software tool developed to help sports-medicine clinicians evaluate recovery following concussion. The program provides a user-friendly injury documentation system that facilitates the tracking of the injury from the field through the recovery process. ImPACT is currently being used by all NHL, NFL, MLB and Major League Soccer (MLS) teams as well as teams in the OHL, Canada Olympic Women’s Hockey and amateur sports organizations.
How Does an Athlete Do a Baseline Test?
- Baseline tests are completed online; anywhere the athlete has internet access. Apple Creek is happy to offer a location for testing in the clinic, to ensure consistency between baseline and follow up tests.
How often should someone get baseline testing?
- Athletes under the age of 20 years should get baseline testing every year. For athletes 20 years and older, baseline testing every 2 years is sufficient.
How much does it cost?
- Baseline testing costs $25.00 and follow-up testing costs $20.00.
How long does testing take?
- The test takes 25 minutes to complete.
What are some of the features of the test?
- Measures player symptoms
- Measures verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time
- Reaction time measured to 1/100th of second
- Assists clinicians and athletic trainers in making difficult return-to-play decisions
- Provides reliable baseline test information

Who Can Administer ImPACT Follow-up Testing?
- Only a physician, neuropsychologist, physiotherapist or athletic therapist who has received ImPACT training can administer the follow-up test. Apple Creek Sports Medicine Centre and Dr. J. Carson are prepared to administer follow-up test and interpret test results.

When should an athlete have baseline testing?
- Before concussion, ideally during or prior to preseason
When should someone get a follow-up test?
- After a concussion once signs a symptoms seem to resolve.
When can the athlete return to play?
- ImPACT should be used as only one source of information regarding the athlete’s level of functioning. Diagnostic or return to play decisions should be based on an evaluation by medical personnel in accordance with usual and standard medical practice. Only a physician can make a return to play decision.
